Boone, NC – A powerful windstorm is set to impact areas of North Carolina’s High Country, beginning Wednesday evening and lasting through Thursday afternoon. Officials warn of widespread power outages, travel disruptions, and potential property damage.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a High Wind Warning will go into effect at 7 p.m. tonight and remain active until 4 p.m. Thursday. Winds are expected to blow at 20 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph in Ashe, Alleghany, and Watauga counties. The strongest winds are forecast along ridgelines and exposed areas.

Residents are urged to prepare now by securing loose outdoor items, such as patio furniture, and avoiding travel unless necessary. High-profile vehicles will face significant difficulty on mountain roads, especially near Boone and West Jefferson.

The NWS advises remaining indoors during the peak of the windstorm and staying away from windows and trees. Those caught outside should seek shelter immediately to avoid falling debris or branches.

Temperatures will remain in the 40s overnight, dropping wind chills into the 20s. Following Thursday’s storm, the weekend forecast shows calmer conditions, with sunny skies and highs in the 50s expected by Saturday.

Travelers should monitor conditions closely, particularly along U.S. 421 and the Blue Ridge Parkway, where high winds often cause debris and temporary closures. Updates will be provided via local radio stations, NOAA Weather Radio, and the NWS website.

Stay safe and stay informed by following emergency alerts and preparing for potential power outages.
