Greenville, SC – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a Wind Advisory for Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey Counties in the North Carolina High Country, effective from 8 p.m. Thursday to 8 a.m. EDT Friday.

According to the NWS, northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected through the night, creating hazardous conditions for elevated areas such as Burnsville, Spruce Pine, Banner Elk, and Newland.

Forecasters warn that tree limbs could be blown down, leading to isolated power outages across the region. Residents should secure outdoor objects and use extra caution when driving, especially in high-profile vehicles traveling through mountain passes.

The strongest winds are expected overnight, with gusts gradually decreasing by mid-morning Friday. The advisory follows a strong cold front moving through the southern Appalachians, ushering in cooler, drier air for the weekend.
