Blacksburg, VA – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Blacksburg has issued Wind Advisories covering parts of northwestern North Carolina and southeastern West Virginia, where gusts up to 50 mph are expected from Thursday night into Friday afternoon.
In North Carolina, the advisory is in effect from 8 p.m. Thursday to 8 a.m. EDT Friday for Ashe, Alleghany, and Watauga Counties, including Boone, Sparta, and West Jefferson. Winds will blow from the northwest at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts near 45 mph.
For Western Greenbrier County, West Virginia, the advisory runs from 2 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, where winds may reach 50 mph. The NWS warns that tree limbs could be blown down, leading to isolated power outages.
Drivers, especially those operating high-profile vehicles, are urged to use caution, as crosswinds may make travel difficult—particularly along mountain passes and open ridges.
Forecasters say winds will gradually decrease late Friday as the pressure system moves east, ushering in cooler weekend temperatures.
