Newport, NC – North Carolina is currently under a severe heat advisory as dangerous levels of heat and humidity are forecasted through Saturday. The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City has warned that temperatures will feel like 105-110 degrees across the region, with today expected to be the most intense.
According to the National Weather Service, residents should take precautions to protect themselves from the extreme conditions. This includes avoiding prolonged outdoor activities, staying hydrated, and checking on vulnerable neighbors and relatives. Additionally, never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, as the interior temperatures can quickly become fatal.
The extended forecast shows that while temperatures may slightly decrease, the heat index will remain high due to continued humidity. Friday and Saturday are expected to see highs around 89 degrees with a chance of thunderstorms, which could provide temporary relief. However, the heat will likely persist into early next week, with temperatures in the upper 80s.
