Charlotte, NC – A sweltering heat wave sent Charlotte’s temperatures soaring to 101°F on Saturday, breaking a two-decade-old record for July 26 and putting much of North Carolina on alert for dangerous heat through the evening.

According to the National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg, the new record beats the previous high of 100°F set in 2005. The Greenville-Spartanburg Airport also matched its own all-time maximum at 99°F. Forecasters say these extreme readings mark some of the highest temperatures recorded in the Carolinas this summer.

Residents across Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and upstate South Carolina faced excessive heat warnings and air quality alerts throughout the afternoon. City and county officials urged people to limit outdoor activity, hydrate frequently, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Emergency management reminded drivers not to leave pets or children in vehicles, as cabin temperatures can climb rapidly.

Extreme heat is expected to persist until sunset, with more advisories possible if temperatures remain elevated. Residents should monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local agencies as the region weathers this historic heat streak.
