Wilmington, N.C. – Triple-digit heat indices are set to blanket southeastern North Carolina this week, with Wilmington reaching highs of 92–95°F Sunday and dangerous heat expected to persist through Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, daily heat index values will soar between 100 and 108 degrees from Monday through Saturday. Beaches may offer slight relief, but inland areas will experience extreme heat with minimal overnight cooling—lows will remain in the low to mid-70s.

Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender counties are all under heightened risk, particularly during peak afternoon hours. Monday and Tuesday are expected to be the most oppressive, with heat index values topping 108°F. Residents are urged to stay indoors, limit outdoor activity, and check on elderly neighbors and those without air conditioning.

Travelers should avoid leaving children or pets in vehicles, even briefly. Pet owners are advised to walk dogs early or late in the day to avoid paw burns from hot pavement. Hydration, shade, and frequent cooling breaks are essential to prevent heat-related illnesses.

This prolonged heat event could stretch into next week, with no significant rain or cooling trend in sight.
