Wilmington, N.C. – Highs will soar into the low 90s across much of eastern North Carolina on Saturday, with temperatures running 7 to 10 degrees above average — and a small chance that any storms that form could turn severe.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, highs of 91°F are expected in Fayetteville, Lumberton, and Clinton, while Wilmington, Whiteville, and Elizabethtown could see highs near 89°F. The risk for thunderstorms remains low — under 10% — but any storms that do form may be capable of producing strong winds or hail.

Cities along I-95 and U.S. 74, including Laurinburg, Lumberton, and Goldsboro, should prepare for hot and humid afternoon conditions. Though widespread storms are unlikely, forecasters warn that isolated cells may rapidly intensify, especially during peak heating hours between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor activity during peak heat, and monitor weather updates in case warnings are issued. This early-season heatwave is a sharp contrast to the cooler conditions earlier this month.

Temperatures will remain elevated through the weekend, and the National Weather Service advises that additional advisories may follow if storm development increases.
