Raleigh, N.C. – A dangerous combination of heat and humidity will grip much of central and eastern North Carolina Tuesday, with heat index values soaring as high as 109 degrees in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. for more than 20 counties, including Wake, Durham, Johnston, Cumberland, and Halifax. Richmond County was newly added to the alert zone early Tuesday, with expected heat index values topping 105 degrees.

Residents in cities like Raleigh, Fayetteville, Durham, and Rocky Mount should limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours. Those without air conditioning are at increased risk of heat-related illness, especially children, seniors, and outdoor workers. The heat will be most intense between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

To stay safe, drink plenty of fluids, stay indoors with air conditioning if possible, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Wear light, loose clothing and schedule strenuous tasks for early morning or evening.

This is the first widespread heat advisory of July, as summer temperatures intensify across the Southeast. Additional advisories may follow if high heat persists through the week.
