Wilmington, N.C. – Dangerously high heat is gripping much of southeastern North Carolina as a heat advisory warns of maximum heat index values from 105 to 109 degrees through Tuesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, the advisory covers communities including Lumberton, Whiteville, Florence, and Elizabethtown, where the combination of heat and humidity will make conditions feel hazardous from noon until 8 p.m. Tuesday. The advisory also stretches into Marion, Dillon, Burgaw, and surrounding areas, highlighting an increased risk for heat-related illnesses.
Residents in affected cities—such as Lumberton (109°), Whiteville (108°), Florence (106°), and Marion (108°)—are urged to limit time outdoors, stay in air conditioning, and drink extra water. Employers are reminded to provide frequent breaks for outdoor workers and ensure access to shade and hydration. Emergency officials note this stretch of oppressive heat rivals last summer’s longest streak of advisories and can quickly turn dangerous for children, seniors, and pets.
The advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday, with additional warnings possible if high temperatures persist into midweek. Stay tuned to local alerts and be prepared for further updates.
