Wilmington, NC – A sweltering heat wave is set to impact southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina today, with heat index values climbing as high as 109°F by midday. Areas from Wilmington to Myrtle Beach could experience dangerous conditions as temperatures rise and humidity intensifies.
According to the National Weather Service, the heat advisory is in effect from 11 AM to 8 PM EDT on Monday, July 21, 2025. The highest heat index is expected in cities such as Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, Lumberton, and Florence. This extreme heat could lead to heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable populations.
Residents are advised to take precautions to stay safe during the heat, such as drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding direct sunlight, and staying indoors in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. For those working outdoors, frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments are crucial to avoid heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
Pet owners should ensure animals have access to fresh water and shaded areas throughout the day. Heat stroke is an emergency—if symptoms occur, move the person to a cooler place and seek immediate medical attention by calling 911.
The advisory is set to expire at 8 PM, but further updates or additional warnings may be issued if conditions persist.
