Raleigh, N.C. – Dangerous heat will intensify across central and eastern North Carolina on Sunday, with heat index values expected to reach up to 109° from Raleigh to Wilmington and surrounding areas.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Raleigh and Wilmington, a second consecutive Heat Advisory will take effect Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., covering the southern and eastern Piedmont, Sandhills, and the coastal plain. Saturday’s advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m., with heat index values already peaking near 107°.
Cities under the advisory include Raleigh, Durham, Fayetteville, Goldsboro, Wilmington, and Lumberton. Residents are urged to avoid strenuous outdoor activities, stay hydrated, and remain in air-conditioned spaces. Agencies recommend checking on vulnerable neighbors, especially the elderly and those without cooling systems.
In the Sandhills and I-95 corridor—areas like Dunn, Clinton, and Laurinburg—outdoor workers face elevated risk. OSHA advises frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas. Signs of heat exhaustion include dizziness and nausea; if symptoms appear, seek medical attention immediately.
Relief is unlikely until after sunset Sunday, though temperatures may ease slightly early next week. More heat advisories could follow if high pressure persists.
