Raleigh, N.C. – North Carolinians from the Triangle to the Sandhills could feel heat index values as high as 108 degrees by midday Sunday, prompting a statewide heat advisory that lasts through 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, dangerously hot conditions are expected across cities including Raleigh, Fayetteville, Durham, and Goldsboro, with similar alerts issued by NWS Wilmington for southeastern counties like Wilmington and Lumberton. The advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., covering much of central and eastern North Carolina.

Residents across Wake, Cumberland, Johnston, and Harnett counties are urged to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, as heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke may occur more quickly in these conditions. In southeastern North Carolina, heat index values could reach 109 degrees, especially in Bladen, Columbus, and New Hanover counties.

Officials recommend avoiding strenuous outdoor activities, drinking plenty of water, and checking on elderly neighbors or those without air conditioning. Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and shaded rest breaks are also advised.

Sunday’s heat wave marks one of the most intense of the summer so far, with conditions rivaling similar July events in 2022.

Heat advisories remain in effect through this evening, and additional alerts may be issued if high temperatures persist into the workweek.
