New Bern, N.C. – Heat index values could reach a sweltering 110°F across eastern North Carolina on Sunday, putting thousands at risk of heat-related illness as dangerously hot and humid conditions grip the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, a Heat Advisory remains in effect through 8 p.m. Sunday for Duplin, Onslow, Carteret, Pamlico, Craven, Lenoir, and surrounding counties. Officials warn that even overnight temperatures will offer little relief, remaining unusually warm through early Monday.

Cities including Jacksonville, New Bern, Kinston, and Morehead City are expected to see peak heat index readings in the late afternoon. Health officials urge residents to stay indoors, limit outdoor activity, and check on vulnerable neighbors, especially older adults and those without air conditioning.

Road crews, landscapers, and other outdoor workers should follow OSHA-recommended precautions like frequent breaks, shaded rest areas, and light clothing. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, nausea, and excessive sweating. Heat stroke is a medical emergency requiring immediate attention.

Sunday marks one of the hottest days of the summer so far for the NC coast. More advisories may follow if the heat persists into the workweek.
