Raleigh, NC – A heat advisory is in effect across much of central North Carolina today, with heat index values expected to soar as high as 106°F in some areas. Residents in counties including Orange, Durham, Chatham, and Wake are urged to take precautions from 11 a.m. this morning through 8 p.m. tonight.

According to the National Weather Service, the combination of high temperatures and excessive humidity will make it feel dangerously hot. Heat index values will range from 105°F to 109°F across the southern Piedmont and Sandhills, with Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill among the hardest-hit areas.

Health risks are significant, as prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Officials urge people to drink plenty of fluids, stay inside air-conditioned spaces, and avoid strenuous activities, especially during the midday heat. If going outside is unavoidable, wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and taking breaks in shaded areas are essential precautions.

The heat is expected to continue throughout the day, and with minimal overnight cooling, the risks of heat-related illnesses will remain elevated. People are advised to stay vigilant and check on vulnerable family members or neighbors throughout the day.

What’s Next:
The advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. this evening, with similar heat expected throughout the upcoming days. Additional advisories may be issued depending on conditions.
