New Bern, N.C. – Coastal North Carolina will bake under oppressive heat Friday, with “feels-like” temperatures soaring to 105 degrees by mid-morning, prompting a Heat Advisory through 7 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, the advisory covers key communities from Washington and New Bern to the Outer Banks, including Beaufort, Hatteras, and Ocracoke Island. The highest risk for heat-related illness will occur between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., especially for those working or exercising outdoors.

Cities like Morehead City, Plymouth, and Kill Devil Hills are expected to reach peak heat index values just after noon. Emergency officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity, drink water frequently, and check on vulnerable neighbors. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration also recommends frequent breaks in air conditioning for outdoor workers.

Public cooling stations are open in Pamlico, Craven, and Hyde counties. Residents are advised to avoid strenuous activity during peak heat, wear light clothing, and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles.

This is the first major heat advisory of the summer for the region, with more heat possible into the weekend.
