Asheville, NC – A deep freeze is expected to grip western North Carolina overnight, with temperatures plunging to 26 degrees in some areas. Residents across Buncombe, Haywood, Jackson, Henderson, and surrounding counties are under a Freeze Warning until 10 a.m. Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, the warning begins at midnight Saturday and affects counties including Madison, Swain, Macon, Transylvania, and Graham. Forecasters urge residents to take immediate steps to protect outdoor plants and exposed plumbing as frost and freeze conditions could damage or kill sensitive vegetation.
Cities such as Asheville, Hendersonville, Brevard, and Franklin are likely to see the sharpest drops in temperature. This cold snap comes unseasonably late for the region, potentially posing a threat to early spring crops and garden plants.
Residents are advised to drain irrigation systems, disconnect hoses, and wrap above-ground pipes to prevent damage. Gardeners should cover or bring in vulnerable plants overnight.
While temperatures will rebound after sunrise, early morning travel may also be affected by patchy frost, especially in low-lying and shaded areas. This warning marks one of the colder April mornings in recent years for western North Carolina.
