Morehead City, N.C. – Sweltering heat and dangerous humidity are gripping eastern North Carolina as a Heat Advisory remains in effect through 7 p.m. Friday, pushing heat index values to 105°. Those traveling along US-70 through Morehead City or working outdoors should take immediate precautions to avoid heat-related illness.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, the advisory affects much of eastern North Carolina, including Carteret, Dare, and Craven counties. Highs near 91°F Friday combine with high humidity, creating oppressive conditions. Officials urge residents to stay indoors, drink plenty of fluids, and check on elderly neighbors. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas for those working outside.

Saturday (June 28) offers only minor relief. Temperatures remain near 90°F, but isolated thunderstorms are possible after 2 p.m., especially in Newport, Beaufort, and New Bern. Gusty winds up to 18 mph could accompany any storm, briefly cooling things down.

Looking Ahead (5-Day Forecast):

  • Friday: High 91°F. Heat Advisory. Chance of PM storms (20%).
  • Saturday: High 90°F. Mostly sunny. PM storms possible (20%).
  • Sunday: High 90°F. Slight chance of PM storms.
  • Monday: High 89°F. Partly cloudy. 30% storm chance late.
  • Tuesday (July 2): Showers likely. High 87°F. 70% chance of rain.
