Raleigh, North Carolina – Severe weather returns to central North Carolina Friday as damaging storms and dangerously high heat grip the region heading into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Level 2 “Slight Risk” for severe storms is in effect Friday afternoon and evening across the Triangle and surrounding counties. Gusty winds and large hail are the primary threats, especially along major routes like I-40 and I-85. Flash flooding is also possible in urban areas with poor drainage.
Heat will intensify quickly Friday, with heat index values between 100°F and 103°F expected east of the Triangle. That includes Wake, Johnston, Wilson, and Edgecombe counties. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, check on elderly neighbors, and ensure access to air-conditioning or public cooling shelters.
This dangerous pattern continues into early next week. The hottest stretch of the year begins Friday and lasts through at least Tuesday. NWS meteorologists warn that a “significant danger” exists due to high humidity, persistent sunshine, and limited overnight cooling.
Saturday and Sunday will bring highs of 94°F to 97°F, with light winds offering little relief. Monday could hit a scorching 100°F. Record highs and warm nighttime lows will keep conditions dangerous for those without adequate cooling.
Warnings may be extended through the weekend. Stay tuned to official updates.
