Greenville, N.C. – Eastern North Carolina faces a growing flood risk as up to 5 inches of rain threatens to inundate low-lying areas through late Tuesday night. Urban flooding and hazardous travel conditions are possible as repeated rounds of heavy rain sweep through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a Flood Watch remains in effect for dozens of counties across the eastern portion of the state, including Pitt, Beaufort, Carteret, Onslow, and Craven. Showers and embedded thunderstorms are expected to continue through Tuesday night, bringing storm totals of 2 to 4 inches, with localized amounts exceeding 5 inches where storms cluster.

Major highways such as U.S. Route 70 and NC-11 could see ponding, especially in areas with poor drainage near Greenville, Jacksonville, and New Bern. Flash flooding may occur quickly in urban centers and near streams and creeks already running high.

Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded roadways and to prepare for possible road closures or detours. Power outages and school disruptions are also possible, particularly in flood-prone communities like Morehead City, Washington, and Havelock.

The Flood Watch remains active through late Tuesday night. Additional warnings may be issued as rainfall continues and ground saturation increases. Stay tuned to local alerts and have an emergency plan ready if evacuation becomes necessary.
