CLAYTON, N.C. – The Neuse River is set to crest above flood stage Tuesday afternoon, prompting a flood warning for Johnston County that will remain in effect through early Wednesday. Minor flooding is expected along both banks, with water reaching the edge of the Neuse River Greenway trail.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, the river stood at 7.5 feet late Monday but is forecast to climb past its 9-foot flood stage overnight, peaking near 10.1 feet by early Tuesday afternoon. Floodwaters could spill over onto the greenway at Covered Bridge Road before receding below flood stage early Wednesday morning.
Officials urge residents to avoid walking near riverbanks, especially after dark when rising waters are harder to detect. Trail users should steer clear of low-lying sections of the greenway, and motorists should watch for potential water on roads near the river.
The flood warning follows recent rainfall across central North Carolina, which has added runoff to already high river levels. The next update from the NWS is expected Tuesday afternoon.
