Raleigh, NC – A heightened risk of wildfires is expected across central and southern North Carolina Friday as gusty winds and dry conditions combine to create dangerous fire weather.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, the increased fire danger remains in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. EDT Friday. Gusts up to 30 mph and relative humidity levels as low as 15 percent are forecast, especially in the Sandhills and much of the Piedmont region.
The North Carolina Forest Service issued a statewide ban on all open burning starting at 8 a.m. Friday. Burning permits have also been canceled until further notice. Officials said the ban will remain in effect as they continue monitoring conditions.
Counties under the advisory include Wake, Durham, Guilford, Forsyth, Cumberland, Moore, and over a dozen others. Many areas received little or no rain Thursday, further elevating wildfire potential.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor activities that could spark a fire, including grilling, campfires, and discarding cigarettes carelessly. Authorities advise securing trailer chains and avoiding parking on dry grass.
Anyone with questions should contact their county fire marshal or local NC Forest Service ranger for guidance.
