Raleigh, NC – Central North Carolina is bracing for significant impacts as Tropical Storm Debby moves through the region, bringing with it the threat of isolated tornadoes, heavy rainfall, and strong wind gusts. The National Weather Service has issued warnings indicating that the storm could result in widespread flash flooding and possible power outages across the state from Thursday night into Friday.

According to the latest forecast, Debby has shifted slightly westward, increasing its forward speed. The storm is expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of additional rainfall, with some areas potentially seeing more. The heaviest rain is likely to occur overnight Thursday into Friday morning, particularly in the Sandhills and Coastal Plain regions. This significant rainfall poses a high risk for flash flooding and could lead to major river flooding, especially in areas along rivers and creeks.

Wind gusts up to 40 mph are expected to cause scattered power outages as early as Thursday night, with downed trees primarily affecting areas along and east of the I-95 corridor. Additionally, the threat of isolated tornadoes remains high through Friday, with the potential for severe weather extending along the coastal plain.

Residents are urged to stay updated on the latest weather reports and take necessary precautions, especially those living in flood-prone areas. The storm’s impacts are expected to taper off by the weekend, but lingering floodwaters could remain a concern into next week.

The National Weather Service continues to monitor the storm closely and advises all North Carolinians to remain vigilant as Tropical Storm Debby progresses through the area.
