Wilmington, NC – Cold rain and rising tides combine for a tricky Monday across coastal North Carolina, where the National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory through 2 p.m. Minor flooding is expected in downtown Wilmington, especially near the Cape Fear River and USS North Carolina.
By late morning, water levels are expected to rise up to half a foot above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Water could begin spilling from storm drains onto Water Street, while the Battleship Road and Market Street area may see brief ponding and restricted access during high tide.
Meteorologists warn that conditions could deteriorate quickly around 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., when tides peak. Drivers should avoid barricaded or flooded roads, never attempt to cross standing water, and allow extra time for midmorning travel. The advisory extends from Inland New Hanover County through the Cape Fear River basin.
After the rain clears this afternoon, drier and calmer conditions take hold, with highs in the upper 40s and overnight lows near 27°F. Sunshine returns Tuesday through Friday, bringing a stretch of mild, bright days with highs near 55°F and cool nights in the 30s.
Looking ahead, forecasters note that the second week of December could turn sharply colder across the East Coast as Arctic air surges south — a signal that winter is tightening its grip ahead of the holidays.
