Greenville, SC – A blast of cold air combined with strong winds will bring frigid and potentially dangerous conditions to parts of North Carolina tonight, prompting a Cold Weather Advisory that will remain in effect through Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, the advisory begins at 5 p.m. Sunday and continues until 9 a.m. Monday for elevations above 3,500 feet in the North Carolina mountains. In these higher elevations, wind chills are expected to drop to between 5 below zero and 15 below zero, creating a heightened risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

Outside the mountains, portions of the North Carolina Piedmont are also expected to feel the impact of the cold. Forecasters say wind chills could fall into the single digits, especially overnight as gusty winds persist.

Northwest winds will increase Sunday evening, with gusts strong enough to make conditions feel significantly colder and potentially cause minor travel issues. Officials warn that exposed skin could be affected quickly during prolonged outdoor exposure.

Residents in affected areas are urged to dress in layers, cover all exposed skin, and limit time outdoors whenever possible. Extra precautions are recommended for those working or traveling overnight and early Monday morning.

The cold and wind may also impact vulnerable populations. Officials encourage residents to check on elderly neighbors, ensure pets are kept indoors, and make sure outdoor animals have adequate shelter.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Monday morning as winds ease and temperatures begin to rebound.

Residents should continue monitoring forecasts and updates from the National Weather Service as this cold snap impacts the western Carolinas overnight.
