Wilmington, NC – Motorists across the Wilmington area are waking up to a cold start Monday, with temperatures running well below normal and creating early-morning roadway concerns despite clear skies.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, high temperatures Monday are expected to reach only 45 to 50 degrees, with morning lows between 23 and 30 degrees. While skies will remain clear, cold overnight conditions may lead to frost on bridges, overpasses, and less-traveled roads during the morning commute.
Drivers along U.S. 17, U.S. 74/76, and College Road should remain alert for slick patches early, especially in shaded areas where temperatures warm more slowly.
Tuesday will remain cool but dry, with highs between 45 and 52 degrees and lows dipping back into the 20s to near 30. Morning travel conditions may again be impacted by cold pavement temperatures before improving by midday.
A noticeable warming trend begins Wednesday, with highs climbing into the 50 to 57 degree range and overnight lows rising into the low to mid-30s. Thursday continues that trend, with highs forecast between 54 and 60 degrees ahead of a weak, dry cold front expected to move through later in the day.
By Friday, mostly clear skies return with highs again in the low to mid-50s and lows between 30 and 40 degrees, keeping conditions cool but more typical for late January.
While no precipitation is expected this week, officials remind drivers that cold mornings can still pose hazards. Residents are encouraged to allow extra time during early travel, dress in layers, and ensure vehicles are prepared for colder starts.
