Wilmington, NC – Coastal residents and beachgoers across southeastern North Carolina are facing hazardous weather conditions today as rain and strong winds move inland, according to the US National Weather Service Wilmington NC.
Forecasters say rain along the coast this morning will spread inland throughout the afternoon, with locally heavy rain possible in the Cape Fear area. Winds of 25 to 35 knots, gusting to 40 knots, have prompted a Gale Warning for coastal waters, with seas reaching 6 to 10 feet.
A high rip current risk is also in effect for east-facing beaches, where surf heights could reach 3 to 5 feet. Swimmers and boaters are urged to exercise extreme caution or avoid the water entirely.
According to the Weather Service, rain chances remain high through tonight—up to 90%—with temperatures holding in the upper 60s and lows near 60. The wet conditions could linger into the Columbus Day holiday weekend, potentially impacting travel and outdoor plans.
Motorists are advised to watch for ponding on roads and reduced visibility, especially during heavier downpours this afternoon and evening.
