Cape Hatteras, NC – A Gale Warning is now in effect for offshore waters from Cape Hatteras to Cape Fear, with hazardous marine conditions expected to worsen early this week.

According to the National Weather Service Ocean Prediction Center, winds will increase Monday, reaching 25 to 35 knots by Tuesday, with seas building to 11 to 19 feet. Scattered showers and thunderstorms may bring locally stronger winds and higher waves.

Forecasters warn that conditions will remain dangerous through at least Friday, with seas holding between 9 and 17 feet much of the week. Winds are expected to stay predominantly from the northeast, sustaining gale-force strength at times before easing slightly late Friday into the weekend.

The advisory covers waters extending up to 100 nautical miles offshore, an area frequented by shipping traffic, commercial fishing vessels, and recreational boaters. Mariners are urged to avoid the area if possible and to closely monitor updated forecasts.

The weather pattern reflects a strong onshore flow, likely tied to a stalled system offshore. Coastal residents may also experience rough surf and an increased risk of rip currents as the strong winds persist.

This Gale Warning highlights the importance of preparation for those navigating offshore. The National Weather Service continues to advise all mariners to remain in port until conditions improve.
