MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Coastal North Carolina is heading into a stretch of calm, sunny weather, but thunderstorms could return as early as Sunday afternoon. Residents and beachgoers can expect warm, dry conditions through Saturday, making for favorable outdoor plans before the unsettled pattern develops.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport, Friday will be sunny with a high near 84 degrees, followed by another clear and calm night. Saturday brings similar conditions, with highs in the low 80s and light northeast winds. By Sunday, however, a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms is in play after 2 p.m., continuing into the evening and possibly lingering through Monday.
Newport, Morehead City, and neighboring communities including Havelock and Beaufort should prepare for brief heavy downpours, lightning, and gusty winds if storms develop. While severe weather is not guaranteed, outdoor plans may need adjusting, especially along U.S. 70 and the Crystal Coast beaches.
The risk for storms continues into Tuesday before skies clear again by midweek. Drivers are advised to use caution on wet roads and residents should keep devices charged in case of isolated power outages.
