Wilmington, NC – Beachgoers along the North Carolina coast are being warned of dangerous surf conditions this Sunday, October 5, as the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wilmington reports a moderate to high risk of rip currents and minor coastal flooding.

According to the NWS, east- and southeast-facing beaches will face the greatest threat, particularly during the morning and evening high tides. The agency advises caution for anyone entering the water and recommends avoiding swimming near piers or in areas without lifeguard supervision.

The weather itself will remain partly sunny and dry, with highs in the low-to-mid 80s inland and near 80 degrees along the coast. Overnight lows are expected to drop to the low 60s inland and upper 60s along the beaches under partly cloudy skies.

Forecasters say the rip current risk stems from persistent onshore winds and elevated surf, which can create powerful channels of water moving away from shore. Even experienced swimmers are urged to remain alert and follow posted beach warnings.

Minor coastal flooding may also occur during both high tide cycles, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas.
