Wilmington, N.C. – Dangerous surf conditions will peak tonight along the North Carolina coast as Hurricane Erin churns offshore, sending waves as high as 12 feet toward Cape Fear and surrounding beaches. The National Weather Service warns that life-threatening rip currents and strong longshore currents will impact swimmers and boaters through early Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, seas will climb to 8–15 feet offshore near and north of Cape Fear, while southern waters face 6–12 foot waves. Winds are expected to reach 25–30 knots with gusts up to 35 knots, worsening conditions at beaches and inlets. Forecasters caution that even experienced swimmers will face extreme risk in the surf zone, where rip currents will be strongest.
Minor coastal flooding is also possible tonight as high tide combines with the storm-driven waves. Some beaches may experience dune erosion and overwash, especially in vulnerable low-lying areas. Officials urge beachgoers to avoid entering the ocean until conditions ease late Thursday.
Warnings remain in effect across coastal North Carolina, and updates will continue as Erin passes offshore.
