Raleigh, NC – A major winter storm is set to impact central North Carolina starting Wednesday morning, bringing a dangerous mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Travel disruptions and hazardous road conditions are expected through Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snowfall and sleet accumulations could range from 1 to 6 inches, with the heaviest totals near the North Carolina–Virginia border. Ice accumulations up to two-tenths of an inch are possible, especially south of US 64. The storm could make both morning and evening commutes treacherous.

Winds will increase to 9–11 mph, with gusts reaching 18 mph. Wind chills could drop as low as 20°F during the day, with temperatures falling into the teens overnight. Bitter cold will persist into Thursday and Friday, with lows in the single digits when factoring in wind chill.

Drivers are urged to delay travel if possible and use extreme caution if they must be on the road. Officials warn that even treated roads may become slick as ice accumulates.

The storm is expected to clear by Thursday evening, with sunshine returning Friday. A weekend warm-up could help melt remaining ice.
