Raleigh, NC – A fire weather warning is in effect across central North Carolina today as a strong cold front moves through the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Increased Fire Danger Statement effective from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., citing high winds and plummeting humidity levels that could accelerate the spread of wildfires.

According to the NWS, relative humidity will drop to the mid-20% range, with gusty winds reaching up to 35 mph. These conditions, combined with dry vegetation, pose a significant risk for fire outbreaks, particularly in areas like Durham, Raleigh, and Fayetteville. Officials urge residents to avoid any outdoor burning and consult local fire management authorities before lighting any fires.

Drivers along major roadways, including I-40 and I-85, should exercise caution as high winds may also impact visibility and vehicle stability.

The cold front will also bring a significant dip in temperatures. Thursday’s high will reach 54°F before dropping to a low of 21°F overnight, with wind chills making it feel even colder. Looking ahead, Friday and Saturday will see sunny skies with highs in the low-to-mid 40s, but overnight lows will plunge into the teens. By Sunday, temperatures will rebound slightly to a high of 58°F.

Residents should secure outdoor items, dress in layers, and ensure pets have warm shelter through the weekend. Fire officials recommend keeping emergency kits ready and monitoring weather updates for potential changes.
