Raleigh, NC – A heat advisory is in effect today across much of central North Carolina, with dangerously high temperatures expected to reach into the upper 90s and heat indexes soaring over 105 degrees in some areas. The advisory, issued by the National Weather Service, is set to last from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, heat illnesses can develop rapidly under these conditions. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities, and seek air-conditioned environments whenever possible. The heat index, which measures how hot it feels when humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature, could reach as high as 108 degrees in places like Raleigh, Fayetteville, and Clinton.
Temperatures are expected to slightly cool down as the week progresses, with Friday’s high forecasted at 93 degrees. However, a 50% chance of rain is expected over the weekend, which may offer some temporary relief. Saturday and Sunday will see highs of 91 and 88 degrees, respectively, with scattered thunderstorms possible.
As always, residents are reminded to check on vulnerable neighbors and relatives, and never leave children or pets in vehicles. The extreme heat poses a significant health risk, particularly for the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions. Stay safe and take necessary precautions during this heatwave.
