Kitty Hawk, NC – Swimmers and beachgoers along North Carolina’s Outer Banks face a life-threatening rip current risk through Wednesday, with conditions especially hazardous near Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, and Buxton.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, northeasterly winds and higher surf are fueling dangerous currents from Southern Shores south to Cape Lookout. High-risk beaches include Kill Devil Hills, Rodanthe, Avon, and Frisco, while moderate threats extend to Emerald Isle and Atlantic Beach. The agency urges everyone to swim near lifeguards if possible and check beach safety flags before entering the water.

Local officials warn that even experienced swimmers can be swept out by strong rip currents. “If you’re caught in a current, don’t swim against it—swim parallel to the shore until you’re free,” said safety officials. Lifeguards recommend floating or waving for help if escape isn’t possible and advise against swimming near piers or jetties, where currents are strongest.

Today’s high risk is expected to last until sunset, and additional alerts may be issued if winds persist. Swimmers should monitor NWS and local lifeguard updates for changes throughout the day.
