Kill Devil Hills, N.C. – Swimmers heading to Outer Banks beaches Thursday should be on high alert for dangerous rip currents that could sweep even strong swimmers out to sea.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, a Beach Hazards Statement is in effect from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday for beaches north of Cape Hatteras, including areas like Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, and Rodanthe. Conditions are expected to be especially hazardous during the hours surrounding low tide at approximately 1:45 p.m.
Lifeguards and emergency officials warn that rip currents pose a serious drowning risk, especially to those unfamiliar with the coastline or swimming without supervision. Visitors are urged to swim near lifeguards, stay out of rough surf, and avoid entering the water alone.
If caught in a rip current, remain calm and swim parallel to shore until free of the current. If you’re unable to escape, float or tread water and wave for help.
Beachgoers should check local signs, flag warnings, and NOAA updates before entering the water. Additional advisories may follow if hazardous conditions persist into the weekend.
