Morehead City, North Carolina – Swimmers headed to Core Banks and Bogue Banks today should think twice before diving in. Dangerous rip currents and strong longshore currents are expected to make beach waters hazardous through 8 p.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect for Carteret County, with the highest risk occurring a few hours on either side of low tide, which hits around 7 a.m. Tuesday. Rip currents may develop quickly and pull even experienced swimmers far from shore.
Both Core Banks and Bogue Banks are listed as danger zones. Officials warn that the strong currents will be present throughout the day, particularly along exposed surf zones. Travelers along N.C. Highway 12 should also remain alert to changing coastal conditions and increased beach activity for the July 4th week.
Lifeguards recommend swimming only near staffed beaches, never going in alone, and remembering that if you’re caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore and don’t fight the pull. If unable to escape, float or tread water until help arrives.
Heat and humidity will also ramp up as we move toward the July 4th weekend.
