Morehead City, N.C. – Swimmers along North Carolina’s central coast should stay alert Saturday as moderate rip current risk stretches from Surf City to Cape Lookout, with storms expected by mid-afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, breezy conditions will build throughout the morning, followed by increasing chances of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. A moderate rip current risk means life-threatening conditions are possible in the surf zone, especially around sandbars and inlets. North of Cape Hatteras to Duck, the rip current risk is forecast to remain low.

Beachgoers from Atlantic Beach to Ocracoke — including popular spots like Emerald Isle and Indian Beach — should use caution and check for posted warnings. Lifeguards may advise swimmers to stay out of the water, especially near jetties or piers where currents can be stronger. Storms rolling through later in the day could also bring brief gusty winds and lightning.

If you’re heading to the coast, swim near lifeguards, avoid deeper areas, and pack rain gear. The National Weather Service advises staying off the beach during storms.

Storm chances taper off tonight, but more summer-like systems could follow into early next week.
