Morehead City, N.C. – Beachgoers along the Outer Banks should remain cautious today as a moderate risk for rip currents extends from Duck to North Topsail Beach, with breezy winds gusting up to 30 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, highs will reach the low to mid-80s across eastern North Carolina on Thursday, May 22. Westerly winds of 10–15 mph are expected, with stronger gusts up to 30 mph possible by this afternoon.

The moderate rip current threat affects several popular spots, including Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Rodanthe, and Atlantic Beach. Swimmers are urged to stay near lifeguards and avoid entering the water alone. Even experienced swimmers may struggle against stronger surf conditions today.

Kinston, Greenville, and New Bern will also feel the warm, dry air, with temperatures around 83°F and sunny skies. Inland conditions are calmer, though travelers heading to the coast should remain aware of changing beach advisories.

The elevated risk for rip currents remains in effect through this evening. Additional coastal warnings may be issued if conditions intensify.
