Fayetteville, NC – A Fayetteville man has been arrested after allegedly firing shots at a North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper during a vehicle pursuit on I-295 in Cumberland County.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the incident began around 8:22 p.m. on Sept. 2 when a trooper attempted to stop a Dodge Caliber for speeding. The vehicle reportedly refused to pull over, leading to a pursuit. During the chase, investigators allege a male passenger leaned out of the vehicle and fired several shots at the trooperโ€™s car, striking and disabling it. The suspects then exited I-295 onto McArthur Road before fleeing east.

On Sept. 3, authorities arrested Jumar Lavelle Moore, 21, of Fayetteville, after locating him in Spring Lake. He has been identified as the passenger accused of firing at the pursuing trooper. Moore was booked into the Cumberland County Detention Center with no bond. He faces charges including felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, felony conspiracy, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Colonel Freddy L. Johnson Jr., commander of the State Highway Patrol, said the arrest underscores the risks law enforcement officers face daily. โ€œWe are thankful for the hard work and thorough investigation conducted by so many of our law enforcement partners,โ€ Johnson said. โ€œTheir collaboration not only helped to identify the involved suspect but helped in ensuring he was taken into custody without incident.โ€
