Greenville, SC – A widespread fire danger alert is in effect across portions of North Carolina and South Carolina as dry air and low humidity increase the risk of wildfires Thursday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg office, relative humidity values are expected to drop into the upper teens and low 20s from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday. The fire threat spans a broad region, including Charlotte, Hickory, and Rock Hill in North Carolina, as well as Greenville, Spartanburg, and Anderson in South Carolina.

Although winds will be lighter than earlier this week, the combination of dry vegetation and extremely low humidity is expected to keep fire risk elevated throughout the day. Smoke may also spread downwind from any mountain wildfires, potentially affecting visibility and air quality.

Officials warn that fire danger could persist into Friday and possibly Saturday as dry weather continues and gusty winds return. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.

Residents are urged to stay alert, avoid open flames, and properly dispose of smoking materials. Emergency services across both states are prepared to respond quickly to any flare-ups.

Updates will be provided through local emergency management channels and NWS alerts.
