Atlanta, Georgia – Georgia’s first major heatwave of the season is ramping up, with temperatures climbing to 100°F and heat index values soaring as high as 107°F across much of the state through Wednesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from 1 p.m. Tuesday through 8 p.m. Wednesday for most of north and central Georgia, including Atlanta, Macon, Columbus, and Athens. Highs will range from 95°F to 100°F, making outdoor activity dangerous, especially for vulnerable groups. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, wear light-colored clothing, and use air conditioning if available.
The advisory overlaps with a Marginal Risk for severe weather Wednesday afternoon and evening. Scattered thunderstorms—some capable of producing damaging winds and frequent lightning—may impact areas from Rome to Augusta. Cloud cover from these storms could lessen peak heat risks but may also bring localized hazards.
The combination of extreme heat and storm threats could disrupt travel, power lines, and outdoor events. Stay hydrated, charge devices, and avoid strenuous activities during peak hours.
More advisories are possible as conditions evolve. Monitor alerts from NWS Atlanta and local emergency management.
