Atlanta, Georgia – Wildfire danger will surge across much of Georgia on Saturday as dry air and gusty winds combine to create explosive fire conditions from the mountains to central counties.

A Red Flag Warning will take effect statewide across North and Central Georgia from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, covering metro Atlanta, the I-75 corridor, and communities stretching south toward Macon. Any spark could spread quickly in the dry and windy setup.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, northwest winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph will develop through the day while relative humidity drops below 20 percent. These conditions allow grass, brush, and forest fuels to ignite easily and spread rapidly.

The warning spans dozens of counties including Fulton, Cobb, Gwinnett, DeKalb, Cherokee, Hall, Bibb, Houston, Muscogee, and Carroll counties, placing large population centers such as Atlanta, Columbus, Macon, and Warner Robins under elevated fire danger.

Fire officials strongly discourage outdoor burning. Even small debris fires or sparks from equipment can quickly escape control under these conditions. Residents should avoid burning leaves, secure trailer chains that could spark on roadways, and delay activities that generate open flames.

State forestry crews and local fire departments remain on alert through Saturday evening as winds peak during the afternoon.

Conditions should gradually ease Saturday night as humidity slowly recovers, but fire agencies warn that dry vegetation could keep wildfire risk elevated into early next week.
