Huntsville, Alabama – Showers and thunderstorms could disrupt the afternoon commute today as rain chances climb to near 50 percent across North Alabama, with more active weather building into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, scattered showers and storms will develop this afternoon, with highs reaching between 81 and 83 degrees. While severe weather is not expected today, brief downpours and lightning could impact travel, especially during peak driving hours.

Rain chances drop slightly Thursday and Friday, with only isolated storm activity expected and highs climbing into the mid-80s. Cities including Huntsville, Decatur, and Florence will see warmer, more humid conditions during this short lull.

A stronger system arrives Saturday, bringing a 40 to 60 percent chance of more widespread storms. Some of these storms could become strong, depending on how much instability builds ahead of an approaching cold front.

Drivers along I-565, Highway 72, and surrounding routes should remain alert for sudden rain and reduced visibility this afternoon and again this weekend. Keep devices charged and monitor alerts as conditions evolve.

Storm chances decrease early next week as cooler, drier air moves in behind the front.
