HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – A calm, misty morning greets the Tennessee Valley today, with dense patches of fog clinging to low fields and backroads. The mild air won’t last long, though—stormier weather is brewing by Friday, followed by a sharp weekend cooldown that will finally make it feel like November.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, temperatures will climb into the low 70s today before rain chances rise late Friday morning. Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms will develop Friday afternoon as a strong cold front sweeps through north Alabama. Gusts up to 25 mph are possible in heavier cells, especially along I-65 between Cullman and Athens. The chance of rain increases to 80% by Friday night, with downpours tapering early Saturday.

Once the front passes, colder air moves in quickly. Saturday’s highs will only reach the mid-70s before winds shift northwest and temperatures begin to fall. By Sunday morning, readings across Madison, Limestone, and Morgan counties drop into the upper 30s—and by Sunday night, lows could dip near freezing. That sets the stage for the first widespread frost or freeze of the season across northern Alabama.

Residents should protect sensitive plants, check outdoor faucets, and prepare for much chillier mornings heading into next week. The pattern looks dry through Veterans Day, with highs near 50°F Monday before rebounding slightly midweek.

This marks Alabama’s first big transition from late fall to early winter—rain, thunder, and then a bite of cold air that reminds the Valley the warm season is truly ending.
