Huntsville, AL – Residents across North Alabama should prepare for a taste of fall this week as cooler air settles into the region, with the season’s first potential frost possible by Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, temperatures will steadily drop through midweek, with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s and overnight lows dipping into the 40s. The coolest period is expected Wednesday night into Thursday morning (Oct. 23), when lows could reach the upper 30s to lower 40s across parts of the Tennessee Valley — particularly in rural and low-lying areas prone to early frost.

Forecasters noted that Wednesday will be the coolest day overall, before conditions begin to slowly moderate by the weekend. While widespread frost is not guaranteed, patchy frost could develop where skies clear and winds calm overnight. Residents are encouraged to cover sensitive plants and prepare outdoor pets and plumbing for the colder conditions.

The shift comes after a stretch of mild autumn weather, marking one of the first notable cold snaps of the season for northern Alabama and southern Tennessee.

This forecast was issued Sunday evening by the NWS Huntsville office, which continues to monitor temperature trends through late week.
