Huntsville, AL – North Alabama residents should prepare for a sharp drop in temperatures Saturday night as a renewed blast of Arctic air brings single-digit overnight lows across the Tennessee Valley.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, temperatures are expected to fall rapidly Saturday evening, with overnight lows ranging from 8 to 11 degrees by early Sunday morning. Wind chills may make it feel even colder in some areas, especially in open or rural locations.

The cold snap follows a brief midweek warm-up, with daytime highs in the 40s before colder air returns late Friday into Saturday. Forecasters say Saturday’s high temperatures will struggle to reach the low to mid-20s, setting the stage for dangerous cold overnight.

The freeze is expected to impact communities across Madison, Limestone, Morgan, Marshall, Jackson, and DeKalb counties, including the Huntsville metro area. Officials warn that prolonged exposure to these temperatures can pose serious health risks, particularly for the elderly, young children, and those without reliable heating.

Residents are urged to take precautions ahead of Saturday night, including insulating exposed pipes, bringing pets indoors, and checking on neighbors who may need assistance. Space heaters should be kept at least three feet away from flammable objects, and heating devices should never be left unattended.

While dry conditions are expected, the extreme cold alone can still cause infrastructure issues, including frozen pipes and increased energy demand.

Another gradual warming trend is expected early next week, but officials stress that Saturday night’s freeze could be the coldest of the season so far for parts of North Alabama.
