Huntsville, Ala. – Drivers across north Alabama and southern middle Tennessee face dangerous travel conditions early Friday as dense fog blankets river valleys and low-lying areas, cutting visibility to a quarter-mile or less. The thick fog is expected to linger until 9 a.m., creating hazards for morning commuters.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, the most severe impacts will occur near rivers and lakes, where fog is likely to remain densest. Motorists on I-565, U.S. 72, and other major roadways may encounter sudden drops in visibility, leaving just seconds to react to vehicles or obstacles ahead.
Officials urge drivers to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra space between vehicles. At 60 mph, drivers have only about one second to respond when visibility is limited to 100 feet, making reduced speeds essential. Commuters should also allow additional time to reach destinations safely.
Conditions are expected to improve steadily after sunrise, with clearer travel by midmorning. However, similar fog development is possible in coming days, especially in rural valleys and areas near water.
