Birmingham, Alabama – Drivers across much of Alabama are waking up to hazardous travel conditions Friday morning as dense fog blankets the region, reducing visibility to a quarter mile or less in several counties.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Birmingham and Huntsville, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. CDT, covering major cities like Birmingham, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, and Florence. The advisory spans 27 Alabama counties and parts of southern middle Tennessee, including Lincoln and Franklin.

Motorists should expect slowdowns on I-65, U.S. 231, and local highways across Jefferson, Shelby, Madison, and DeKalb counties. Law enforcement officials urge commuters to drive with headlights on low beam, allow extra following distance, and avoid high speeds. Conditions are especially dangerous in low-lying areas and near rivers, where fog tends to thicken.

Cities such as Gadsden, Decatur, and Cullman may not see improved visibility until after sunrise. Local schools and businesses remain open, but travelers are advised to check for delays or incidents due to the fog.

This is the first widespread fog event in Alabama since early spring. Another advisory may be issued if conditions redevelop overnight.
