Huntsville, AL – A late-night tornado watch has been issued for 13 counties across north and northwest Alabama, prompting overnight weather concerns through early Monday.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK, Tornado Watch 81 remains in effect until 5 a.m. CDT Monday, March 31. Counties under alert include Madison, Colbert, Lauderdale, Cullman, Fayette, Franklin, Lamar, Lawrence, Limestone, Marion, Morgan, Walker, and Winston.

Residents in these areas should prepare for potential tornado development, damaging winds, and large hail. The tornado watch means conditions are favorable for storms capable of producing tornadoes and other severe weather.

Emergency officials urge residents to keep phones charged and weather alerts enabled while sleeping. Have a safe space identified and be prepared to move there quickly if warnings are issued.

This region of Alabama is no stranger to early spring tornado activity. Historically, late March brings elevated storm risk across the Tennessee Valley. Strong storm systems moving through during overnight hours pose heightened danger due to reduced visibility and alertness.

Motorists traveling overnight across north Alabama should use caution and stay updated on road conditions. Stay tuned to local media and NOAA Weather Radio for updates through the early morning hours.
