Normal, IL – A 27-year-old graduate student at Illinois State University was arrested Thursday after allegedly disrupting campus events, according to the Illinois State University Police Department (ISUPD).

According to ISUPD, Derek Lopez of El Paso, Illinois, was taken into custody October 17, 2025, following an investigation into two recent informational tabling events hosted by a registered student organization. Lopez faces charges of disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property.

Police said Lopez allegedly disrupted both events, prompting the organization to contact campus authorities. The situation reportedly escalated, leading to an investigation, identification, and eventual arrest. Officials noted the case remains under review and could result in additional charges or university disciplinary action.

Illinois State University Police Chief Aaron Woodruff emphasized the department’s commitment to both safety and free expression on campus. “We are committed to protecting the First Amendment rights as well as safety of everyone in our campus community,” Woodruff said, encouraging students to “learn more about free speech rights and responsibilities” at the university.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
